A wood-burning fireplace is a wonderful luxury, but it requires regular maintenance. When you burn wood, the unburned particles and moisture-laden smoke travel up the cool chimney, condense, and form a substance called **creosote**. Creosote is highly flammable, and if it builds up too much, it’s the primary cause of chimney fires. **Fireplace chimney cleaning**, or chimney sweeping, is the process of removing this flammable buildup to ensure your fireplace is safe to use.
Creosote comes in three stages. **Stage 1** is light, sooty, and easy to remove with a brush; it looks like black dust. **Stage 2** is a flaky, crunchy material that has built up over several burns. **Stage 3** is a glaze—a hard, shiny, tar-like substance that is extremely difficult to remove and indicates a serious safety hazard. The key to safe operation is preventing the creosote from ever progressing beyond Stage 1 or 2.
The rule of thumb from the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) is to have your chimney swept **after every cord of wood burned**, or whenever the creosote buildup reaches 1/8th of an inch thick. If you haven't used your fireplace in a long time, the chimney still needs a Level 1 inspection to check for animal nests, debris, or a rusted, seized damper.
Our fireplace cleaning service is a top-down, white-glove process that focuses on cleanliness inside your home. We start by laying drop cloths across your entire hearth and floor, and we often seal the fireplace opening with a large magnetic cloth to prevent any dust from escaping.
The sweep is generally done **top-down**. Our technician climbs onto the roof and drops a stiff-bristled brush or specialized poly brush attached to flexible rods down the flue. We scrub the interior walls of the flue liner from top to bottom, which loosens all the creosote and forces it down onto the smoke shelf and into the firebox. This top-down method ensures we hit every square inch of the flue.
Once the sweeping is complete, the focus moves to the **smoke chamber** (the transitional area above the damper) and the firebox itself. We use a powerful, three-stage **HEPA filter vacuum** system. This vacuum is designed to capture even the smallest dust particles without releasing them back into the air. We meticulously vacuum the creosote and soot from the smoke shelf (an area that collects a lot of debris) and the entire firebox.
Our service includes a full visual and physical inspection of all components. We check the condition of the **flue liner**, the **damper** (making sure it opens and closes completely), the **smoke chamber parging**, and the **firebox refractory panels** (firebrick). If you have glass doors, we clean and polish the glass as part of the service, leaving your hearth spotless. A sweep isn't just a clean; it's a critical safety inspection that verifies the three main hazards—fire, carbon monoxide, and obstruction—are eliminated, so you can enjoy your next fire with complete peace of mind.
